A modern homepage needs to do more than look good. It should help visitors understand what you offer, find the right information, and take the next step without confusion. The same principles apply to dashboards and forms, where clear layouts and familiar controls make everyday tasks easier.

Let’s explore modern homepage design approaches for different needs, from organizing content and presenting dashboard data to creating forms that are easy to complete. You’ll also learn how thoughtful layouts can improve usability, accessibility, and the overall user experience.

1

What Does Modern Homepage Design Have to Do?

A homepage does four jobs: state the offer, help people find their way, show the product or proof, and invite one next step. The table maps each job to a part of the page. The framing is mine.

Job

Part of the page

What to check

State the offer

Layout and first screen

After one screen, can a stranger say what you do?

Help people find their way

Menu

Can keyboard and touch users reach every link?

Show the product or proof

Dashboard preview, tables, 3D

Is it truthful, readable and quick to load?

Invite one next step

Form or button

Does it ask only for what the next step needs?

How Should a Modern Homepage Layout Work?

Give the page one offer line, one main action, and sections that answer the next question in order. That is my view. Eleken's roundup of 50 websites shows three ways to open a page, and I describe them as Eleken does. (Source: "50 Best Website Design Examples")

  • Umbrel leads with a short promise: "Your cloud. In your home."

  • Mode shows a bright green "Try for free" button that contrasts with a darker background.

  • Appwrite displays its GitHub star count near the top, which builds trust with developers.

Eleken's notes mostly describe style. None gives speed or conversion data, so use the examples for ideas, and test your own page.

When Is a 3D Hero Worth It?

Eleken describes two 3D openings. Stripe Press shows floating, rotating book covers that respond to scrolling. Ethnocare shows a floating, rotating 3D model of its product. Both make the product the star. Four rules keep that from hurting the page. They are my view, with sources where I have them:

  1. Add a cue. Nothing says a model can be dragged until you say so.

  2. Keep feedback instant. The Doherty threshold says people work best when a computer responds in under 400 milliseconds. Google wants at least 75% of visits to respond to input in under 200 milliseconds. (Source: "Interaction to Next Paint is officially a Core Web Vital")

  3. Offer a motion switch. The W3C explains that scroll and interaction motion can trigger vestibular disorders, and its Level AAA criterion asks that such motion can be disabled. (Source: "Understanding SC 2.3.3: Animation from Interactions")

  4. Ship a fallback. Our 3D interactive UI/UX design work pairs each 3D scene with a 2D fallback and builds to WCAG 2.2 AA.

3

How Do You Approach Modern Web Menu Design?

Modern web menu design comes down to three habits: keep the menu short, mark the current page, and make submenus work without a mouse. The W3C's menus tutorial says to mark up menus as nested lists and to show the current page. It adds that submenus should not open when a keyboard user tabs through, because that forces them past every submenu item.

Use the parent item as a toggle, or add a separate toggle button. Also add a short delay before a submenu closes, so shaky mouse movements do not lose it. (Source: "Menus Tutorial")

Eleken describes Teenage Engineering's menu as icon-based, with wireframe-style illustrations instead of dropdowns. That suits a design-led brand. My caution: add text labels to icons, since visitors cannot guess every symbol.

4

How Should Modern Web Dashboard Design Appear on a Homepage?

On a homepage, modern web dashboard design means a preview, not the app. Show the outcome, not the whole interface. For real app dashboards, see our post on modern web app design.

Muzli's gallery of 50 dashboards says it mixes practical, real-world SaaS designs with experimental concepts. One entry still shows template brackets in its description, such as "[Metric Type]." (Source: "50 Best Dashboard Design Examples for 2026") Treat the gallery as inspiration, not proof that a design works.

Rules for a preview, all mine:

  1. Use real data, or label sample data as sample data.

  2. Show three or four numbers, not twenty.

  3. Put status in words as well as color. Muzli's ledger example uses text tags such as Completed, Canceled and Pending.

  4. Describe the preview in the image text, so screen reader users get the point.

  5. Keep any chart animation short, and respect the motion switch from the 3D rules above.

5

What Makes Modern Table Web Design Work?

Modern table web design starts with a reason to compare, such as plans or features, so use a table only then. The W3C says tables need header cells marked with th so assistive technology can connect each value to its heading. (Source: "Tables Tutorial") Keep the columns few, and keep a text label in every cell that carries meaning.

Phones are the hard part. WCAG's reflow rule asks that content work at 320 CSS pixels without two-way scrolling, but it allows two-way scrolling for data tables. (Source: "Understanding SC 1.4.10: Reflow") A wide pricing table can scroll inside its own container. Do not let the whole page scroll sideways. To see a pricing module work, open the demos in the HubXpert module showcase.

6

What Makes Modern Web Form Design Work?

I found no research I can cite that isolates one form choice as the cause of more sign-ups. So these modern web form design checks aim at fewer errors and fewer abandoned forms, not at a promised lift.

  • Label every field. The W3C forms tutorial says placeholder text is not a replacement for labels. (Source: "Form Instructions")

  • Mark fields that collect personal data, such as name and email, so browsers can fill them in. WCAG asks that the purpose of such fields can be determined by software, and the autocomplete attribute is the usual way. (Source: "Understanding SC 1.3.5: Identify Input Purpose")

  • Ask only what the next step needs. That is my rule, and I found no research-backed field count.

  • Name the button after the action, such as "Request a quote."

  • Confirm the result on the page, so visitors know it was sent.

One HubSpot note: progressive fields, which swap in new questions for known contacts, are labeled legacy in HubSpot's docs. The page says the updated form editor does not support them. (Source: "Use progressive fields in forms (legacy)") Check which editor your forms use before you plan around them.

How Do You Build a Modern Homepage on HubSpot?

Split the page into layers. The theme holds the menu, type and spacing. The template holds the layout. Modules hold the parts that repeat or change. HubSpot's developer docs describe themes, templates and modules as layers, and say editors work inside style and layout guardrails. (Source: "HubSpot CMS overview")

Our module library includes a Flex Hero Banner, an FAQ accordion, and pricing modules such as Price Comparison and Dynamic Pricing Plan. A 3D hero is custom work. Our Imaginate Your Space case study describes custom 3D web development integrated into the HubSpot CMS.

8

How Do You Review a Homepage Before Launch?

  • Read the first screen out loud. Does it say what you offer?

  • Tab through the menu, and open each submenu with the keyboard.

  • Check that status is shown in words, and that previews have image text.

  • Narrow the window to 320 pixels. Look at your tables.

  • Fill in the form using your browser's autofill.

  • Load the page on a phone. If you have a 3D hero, check that the fallback appears when motion is off.

FAQs

What Should a Modern Homepage Include?

A clear offer, a short menu, proof or a product preview, and one main next step. Everything else should earn its place by helping one of those four jobs.

Should My Homepage Have a 3D Hero?

Only if 3D shows something a photo cannot, such as a product's form or parts. It needs a cue, quick feedback, a motion switch and a fallback. If it fails any of those, use a still image.

Does a 3D Hero Hurt SEO?

I found no study that links 3D heroes to rankings. The risk is speed: a heavy scene can slow the page and its response to input. Test the page on a phone before you launch.

How Many Menu Items Should a Homepage Have?

I found no research-backed number. Keep the list short enough that every item is visible and clear, and move the rest into a footer or submenu.

Are Mega Menus Modern?

They can work for large sites, but only if keyboard users can open and close them. Follow the W3C advice above: do not open submenus on Tab, and give a clear toggle.

How Should Tables Work on Mobile?

Let the table scroll inside its own container, and keep the rest of the page from scrolling sideways. WCAG's reflow rule allows two-way scrolling for data tables.

How Many Fields Should a Homepage Form Have?

I found no research-backed count. Ask only for what the next step needs, and label every field.

Can I Build All of This on HubSpot?

Yes, using a theme, a template and reusable HubSpot modules. Custom pieces such as a 3D hero need development work. For forms, check whether you use the updated editor, because HubSpot's docs mark progressive fields as legacy there.

Final Thought

Modern homepage design starts with four questions. What do you offer? Can people find their way? Does the product show clearly? Is the next step simple? Answer them for your own page, in that order, and fix the first screen before anything else.
