White Label Solution Explained for Agencies & Startups

A product or service that one company builds and another company sells under its own brand is a white label solution. The buyer sees the brand they trust. The builder stays out of sight.

That covers a lot of ground, from a website builder with your logo on it to a team that builds HubSpot workflows for you. This guide separates the kinds, shows how the money and handoffs work, and explains which ones suit a small agency and which suit a startup. It also covers when to walk away.

1

What Is a White Label Solution? (Simple Explanation)

A white label solution is a product or service that one company creates or delivers, while another company rebrands and sells it under its own name. It lets businesses offer more services without building everything in-house. (Source: "White-label product")

Simple example:

You run a marketing agency. Your clients need web design, but you don't have an in-house development team. You partner with a white label provider who builds the websites for you. You deliver the finished work under your agency's brand, and your clients deal directly with you, not the provider.

2

What Types of White Label Solutions Exist?

Three types cover most cases: software, delivery work, and physical goods. They differ in what you control and what you depend on.

Type

What you resell

What you control

What you depend on

Software

A finished app with your logo, such as a website builder or reporting tool

Brand, price, first-line support

The vendor's uptime and product updates

Delivery work

Skilled work done to order, such as HubSpot builds and migrations

Client relationship, scope, price

The provider's skill and speed

Physical goods

Products with your label, such as store-brand food or branded mugs

Brand, price, marketing

The maker's quality and stock

When we searched for white label business opportunities, many top results pushed apparel, drinkware, candles, and cosmetics. That is ecommerce, and it is a different business with different risks. This guide covers the first two rows.

3

How Do White Label Business Opportunities Work?

You buy from a provider at a wholesale price, add your brand and your own price, and keep the difference. You own the customer. The provider owns the build.

The path looks the same for software and for delivery work:

  1. Pick one gap. Choose something clients already ask you for and you turn down.
  2. Find a provider. Look for one that has built this exact thing before.
  3. Run a small paid test. Judge the first delivery yourself before you promise anything to a client.
  4. Set your price. Cover the provider's cost, plus your own review and support time.
  5. Write the rules down. Say who owns the files, who answers support questions, and who may contact your client.
  6. Sell it under your name. Then check the first client's experience end to end.

Here is an illustration, not a benchmark. Say a reporting tool costs you $30 per client each month, and you charge $150 for a reporting package. You keep $120 before support time. If ten other agencies resell the same tool, clients can compare prices. Your margin then depends on what you add: setup, advice, and a report people read.

4

Which White Label Opportunities Fit an Agency & Which Fit a Startup?

Agencies fit best, because they already have clients to sell to. A startup usually has no clients yet, so a white label deal gives it something to sell but no one to sell it to.

Picture a six-person agency with a dozen retainer clients. Three of them have asked for CRM setup, and nobody on staff builds that. The best white label opportunities for a small agency look like this. A request keeps coming back, and the skill is hard to hire for one project. Saying yes with a partner behind you costs less than turning the work away.

Startups face a different problem. Suppliers are easy to find. Buyers are not. Our view is that a startup should line up paying customers first, then pick the provider, because the provider cannot create demand. If you cannot name who will pay, you do not have an opportunity yet.

5

Is HubSpot Itself a White Label Solution?

No. HubSpot partners can promote and resell HubSpot, but the product stays HubSpot's, under HubSpot's terms.

The partner agreement lets a partner demonstrate and promote HubSpot, and give customers access under HubSpot's customer terms. A partner that buys HubSpot in its own name can set its own resale price.

It must pass HubSpot's customer terms on to the client. The same agreement bars partners from building derivative works of HubSpot's products. It also limits use of HubSpot's trademarks to the program. We found no clause that lets a partner put its own brand on HubSpot. (Source: "HubSpot Solutions Partner Program Agreement")

So what do HubSpot agencies white label? Delivery work. That means onboarding, migrations, integrations, themes and modules, and reporting. Our HubSpot white label services ship that work under your brand. HubXpert holds HubSpot accreditations in onboarding, custom integration, and data migration.

6

How Do You Find the Best White Label Business Partner?

Start where partners are already vetted, then test one with a small paid job. Nobody can name the best white label business for everyone, because fit decides.

For HubSpot work, the HubSpot Solutions Directory is a good first stop. You can filter it by service, industry, region, language, and credentials, including certifications and accreditations. HubSpot re-checks accredited partners every two years, and the process includes customer references and interviews with HubSpot experts. The directory lists partners in general, so ask each one whether it does white label work. (Source: "HubSpot Accreditations")

Once you have a shortlist, check these five things:

Check

What good looks like

Where to look

Credentials

Current certifications, and accreditations for the work you need

The partner's directory profile

Fit

Has built what you need before, and can describe how

A scoping call

Terms

NDA, file ownership, and no contact with your client

The contract

Speed and minimums

A clear start time and a stated minimum engagement

The proposal

Support

A defined window after launch for fixes

The contract

NDAs usually keep client names private, so ask for volume, process, and a sample of documents instead.

Then run a pilot. At HubXpert, the minimum engagement is 10 hours, which is $500 at the $50 starting rate. If clients ask why they should trust a partner at all, our page on why businesses hire HubSpot partners covers it.

When Does a White Label Offer Not Fit?

It does not fit when you cannot add anything of your own, or when you cannot stand behind it when something breaks.

  • Many resellers sell the same product. If clients can find your exact offer elsewhere, price becomes the only difference.
  • The provider can reach your client. Check the contract for who may contact whom, and for any right to bill your client directly.
  • You cannot support it. When the tool or the build fails at 6 p.m., the client calls you first.
  • Your brand has no pull yet. A new name with no audience gains little from a ready-made product.

FAQs

Is white label the same as reselling?

No. Reselling means selling a product under the maker's brand. White label means selling it under yours. HubSpot partners do the first. They resell HubSpot and earn a 20% revenue share for up to three years, but the product keeps HubSpot's name. (Source: "HubSpot Solutions Partner Program Policies")

What is the difference between white label and private label?

White label products are made once and sold to many resellers with light changes. Private label products are made to one brand's own specs and sold only by that brand. White label is faster to launch. Private label gives you more control over the product.

Who handles support after the sale?

You answer first, because the customer bought from you. The provider fixes what you cannot, through a channel the customer never sees. Put that split in the contract, with response times. HubXpert builds a defined post-launch support window into each delivery.

Is white labeling legal?

In general, yes. It is an ordinary business model, used by supermarkets and banks. The legal details sit in your contract and in the rules for your industry and country, so have a lawyer review the final terms.

Final Thoughts

Before you shop, finish this sentence: "Clients keep asking me for ___, and I turn it down because ___." Cannot fill the blanks with something real? Then you have a hunch, not an opportunity.

If you can, run one small paid pilot and judge the delivery yourself. The best white label business for you is the one where a client request already exists.
